Love is an endless subject, and while it has been the theme of thousands of films and millions of songs, there are always new aspects to discover about it. This is a documentary project about love and its illusions: about unrequited love, about platonic love, about failed relationships, about people who remain in our minds long after they are gone, about the mysteries of attraction and the miseries of rejection, about the fantasies we create in our minds when we first fall for someone, and about the explanation for it all.
It is mostly a film about fantasy versus reality, the illusions that we create in our minds and hearts, and the reality behind them.
The film will explore contemporary trends and cultural changes and try to understand what are the deeper origins of our feelings, exploring the subject from three different points of view: the personal, the literary, the scientific. Many questions will be raised and some of them answered. Is there such thing as love at first sight? Why do some women like bad guys and not nerds? Why do we tend to fall in love with our opposites? Is love just a chemical reaction in the brain created by evolution to perpetuate the species? Or is there something else?
In terms of structure, the documentary combines personal stories of common people about their crushes and impossible love interests with interviews with psychologists, geneticists, anthropologists and writers who try to explain the impossible: what is love?
