My name is Grant Takara, I’m a 19 year old mechanical engineering student from Hawaii that’s using Kickstarter to launch Airfoil, a supercool ballpoint pen like you’ve never seen before. I’ve already raised $9k with 28 days still to go.
Airfoil is a beautifully detailed twist pen inspired by engineering design in aviation. What sets Airfoil apart is its redesigned body. Most pens have a plain tube. Airfoil utilizes curves, has depth, structural strength, and is easily recognizable from common pen designs. It’s crafted from titanium, aluminum, stainless steel, and 24K gold. Each pen is assembled by hand, tested, and carefully inspected. Titanium models are partially hand crafted. All models feel cold to the touch, and substantial due to the metal construction. Another neat feature of the Kickstarter project is the amount of customization that is offered. Backers can select between 5 different anodized finishes, and polished and black PVD coated options. In addition, backers can add clips, 24K, silver, and black plated bolts, and custom colored center columns to their pen. This brings a new level of personalization that backers can experience to make their own custom pen.
Best of all it sells for just $59, significantly less than other high-end pens.
Some comments from reviews include the following:
“The Airfoil is definitely a conversation starter. The 7075 Aluminum is nicely machined, and the red anodizing looks good too.” – Ed Jelley.
“The Airfoil is very Ferrari-like” – Ed Jelley
